This is some stellar writing Laura.

I was there yesterday, the small pee pee energy Barry's waited until we had walked past Trafalgar Square then pushed the police back to intentionally block the Stand up to Racism protesters down that street .... They wanted to hurt us, the hatred coming from them was vile.

I find it odd that mainstream media claimed there was only 5k of us when there was more like 20k. And there certainly wasn't millions of them, more like 110k ( that's Wembley and a bit)

A few hours later when we could safely get out the stench of urine and alcohol was making us famished protesters feel sick...

They are proud to call themselves fascists....

Emma's avatar

I have mixed feelings about the met police though..... While they made sure we eventually got a safe passage out the street we were trapped on, they allowed us to get trapped in the first place.... They just made more work for themselves as the reason it took so long to ' free ' us was because they had to close more roads off so we could avoid the drunk riled Barry's waiting for us

Theano's avatar

Thank goodness you came out safe despite the police neglect. ❤️

Dx's avatar

Glad you got out unscathed Emma.

Here in Scotland it feels like some of the actions of the police are designed to make any protest / counter-protest as confrontational as possible.

One WPC did admit that they weren't arresting anyone for nazi salutes, hate speech, or personal threats as they believed they would be beaten up. But anyone who was concerned could make a complaint after the event and it would be looked into....

But to the passers-by it just made it look like that sort of behaviour is acceptable.

Hi Em , I was there too, wanted to join the stand up to racism peeps but by the time I arrived it was impossible, too much flag waving for me and I really felt

uneasy with some of the signalling on display. Plenty of quite unpleasant looking chaps in amongst the attendees, that much is true. I couldn’t hear exactly what Musk was saying from where I was but the roars of approval he was getting sounded like a football crowd - obviously now I’ve seen the text it’s even more disturbing, ffs. 😬

Erm..what made you characterise them as Barrys? Is that a ‘thing’?

I hadn’t heard it until now

All the best

Baz

10/10 for being there. You and the 19 999 who were with you are the best hope for the future!

For me this is Deja Vu but the fascists had nothing like this level of support when WE (meaning Anti-Fascist-Action) DEFEATED the NF and BNP in the 1990s. You are correct to call this vermin FASCISTS as the term "Far Right" has been used to normalise this filth in mainstream discourse. I never use it. As regards mainstream media and the politicians, I find it disgusting that the government defends the right of fascists to protest and intimidate en masse so long as they don't break the law and that the political violence of the left (such as it is) and that of fascism is equally ranked. Presumably, if the fascists had broken the police line and physically attacked the anti-fascist demonstrators who then defended themselves then they'd be as guily of violence as the fascist (or a geriatric holding up a piece of cardoard). We need to change our tactics and remember what happened at Cable Street, Lewisham, Digbeth Hall and Waterloo 1993 and look to Germany's Black Bloc for inspiration. THEY SHALL NOT PASS!!!!!

Baz's avatar

Roger I was there too, not where the anti fascists we’re being attacked though. You make it sound like the huge crowd was made up of fascists, what struck me was the vast numbers of ‘normal’ people. Surprisingly I saw members of racial minorities draped in the flag of St George and the Union Jack represented too. Something is happening but I think it’s quite different to the 80’s and 90’s.

Roger Cottrell's avatar

Yes, it's more dangerous because the Left is weaker and the new fascism has this broader constituency of support that extends into a layer of an alienated and therefore more backward and fragmented working class. These are the people disconnected from their own history of class struggle, who embrace identity over class consciousness and are partially integrated into their own enslavement by the Spectacle. That there were non whites on a fascist march should not be surprising as the new fascism deals in cultural identity, not eugenics. I live in a part of London full of wealthy Hindus who hate Muslims, read the Daily Mail and adpre Modi. Suella Braveman comes from this constuency and even went to school around here. She's also a fascist. So is Priti Patel - and there are plenty of Jewish fascists in the Zionist camp However, once you start calling the new fascism something else, such as Far Right, you normalise it into mainstream discourse like that idiot scumbag Larry O'Hara (a mate of Patrick Harringdon after all) and fascist academics like Frank Furedi and Matt Goodwin. The next thing, you're saying they have a right to free speech, to function, to an opinion and to life. One of the reasons the new fascism was allowed to get as strong and well organised as it now is is because the Left, fixated with Nazi Hitler worship (a lost cause) failed to recognise what it was and deal with it sooner, before an ex-BNP thug and police informant inside the Men in Gear Football Firm now known as mortgage fraud felon Tommy Robinson caught the attention and support of Tech Oligarchs who are the immediate social basis of the new fascism. This applies both to Reform and its Friekorps that is the EDL/Unite the KIngdom. Robinson actually boasted that he left a demo to go to a public toilet and was untouched by anti-fascists. He shouldn't have come out of that toilet alive and we are now living with the consequences. This country could easily be a fascist state like America in five years, Jeremy Corbyn's new party will not be allowed to take power by winning an election aone and we need to organise extra-Parliamentary Councils of Action and an anti-fascist militia for the bloodshed and potential civil war to come.

Baz's avatar

Roger - Thanks for the reply. Blimey, that’s quite a piece there, it’ll take me some time to digest. My basic point still stands though, I don’t think Saturday represents the level of fascism you suggest.

Roger Cottrell's avatar

OK, wait for my next Substack blog but one.

Baz's avatar

Will do👍🏼

Wizard's avatar

Their definition of "fascists" includes normal whites whom they disagree with, also did , also will. If these normal whites are Nationalist, then they are even worse.

Poshlost's avatar

Always an insightful appreciation of the utter mindlessness that appears to permeate our everyday existence at the moment? Was it always so, or is my senility clouding my judgement?

Hilary Minor's avatar

No. It isn't. You are as clear sighted as ever.

Aza Y. Alam's avatar

Another brilliant satire - my laughter helped ease the shock of how the most ignorant are dominating public spaces ad warping discourse so far away from any sense of what is true, that I'm realising I'm living amongst the seriously delusional M!y mental health is at risk the more I isolate from social contact as it's just too hard to work out who is and who is not holding this perspective on why the UK is in such a mess.

Emma's avatar

I was at the counter protest yesterday, please don't let this make you isolate, there are many lovely people in the world, I met some of them yesterday, being in community and collaborating together is how we fight this...while being boxed in down that street we did flash dance mobs, we were singing and dancing and hugging and talking.

I urge you to seek like minded people, there's more of us than there are of them, only most are too scared to put themselves out there, and that's exactly what the Barry's want

Aza Y. Alam's avatar

Awww ... Emma, sending you a big hug for your kind and encouraging words... I would have gone to London but I'm committed to taking care of my mother who is 93 - so that itself is quite isolating - as even family members are not coming round much --its hard to be with someone with memory loss and hard of hearing ... so the couple of days or so I have free, I find myself mostly catching up on sleeping (!) and lacking the energy to reach out much... I am planning to go to the next Defend Our Juries action - thank you again, I know self - isolation is no answer in the long term !

Rebel Nun's avatar

Taking care of your mother is hard work, and the most important thing there is - caring for those who need us! You’re fighting the good fight every day, and giving encouragement to everyone here. Thank you! 🙏 You’re a star along with the marchers! 🌟❤️

Aza Y. Alam's avatar

Dear Rebel Nun, it's funny how total strangers can say something that makes one feel 'seen'! Thank you so much for taking the time to respond and what a beautiful expression to share, 'fighting the good fight'... it reminds me of my school days up in the north east and how I loved the hymns we used to sing in the school choir ! And that I really am keeping to the promises I made to myself, as a child, about not complying with evil such as the" I'm only doing my job" refrain of Germans in the Nazified era.

💕🙏🏾💕

You meet the nicest people doing this kind of work.

Emma's avatar

You really do, because we were trapped for so long ( we was meant to leave at 4pm but couldn't until 7pm) some women needed to empty full bladders, so we used our banners and umbrellas to shield them so they could go, we shared food and water, the Barry's expected us to be scared but it made us come together....

Lisa Savage's avatar

Good on you! Wearing adult diapers as an act of resistance has become a thing in my life.

Emma's avatar

That was suggested haha 😆 bless some of them were at their first protest, I went for the ' pickle myself ' option

Lisa Savage's avatar

What is the 'pickle myself' option, please?

Dx's avatar

This is what humanity looks like. And this is what the Barrys just don't get. ❤️🕊️, Dx

It's my duty as a human being to protect my sisters and brothers. People are scared, let's show them there's more of us than there is the Barry's

Roger Cottrell's avatar

An excellent piece as usual, Laura. I really need to write something on the watershed that was yesterday's obscene orgy of fascism. The role of Bannon and Musk needs to be highlighted together with the government's immediate capitulation to a rally whose leaders, in Britain and the US, were calling for that same government's head. The contrast in the attitude of both government and law enforcement, to fascist protesters and opponents of genocide, is evident but needs to be hammered home together with the role of toxic media. And it's time we started building anti-fascist militia. If Elon Musk, from the distance of his Death Star, wants violence to come to his supporters, it can be arranged,

Rebel Nun's avatar

We mustn’t sink to their level. Our violence will only justify theirs, and can never match it - we’ll be demolished. It’s what the forces behind this horror want. Only non-violence makes real change.

Dolly's avatar

I see exactly where you're coming from-and I used to think exactly the same when I was younger. I've never believed in violence as an end to a problem-but I've come to the conclusion that the only way IS to fight back. I'm approaching 80 now. Pacifists seem to get hurt or killed or arrested. I don't advocate starting a fight-but certainly advocate fighting back. Otherwise you are only making it easy for the aggressors. Our governments have demonstrated they are on the side of the aggressors. We only have ourselves to defend ourselves.

I'm a fan of the Taoist approach: don't start anything; only give back what you get.

And if you're a Sage, transform it as you give it back.

❤️🕊️,Dx

Dolly's avatar

Exactly. Being angry or scathing towards these fascists won't achieve a thing. the only thing they can measure in their brains is strength and violence. The more they are allowed to be violent in strong numbers- the more violent they will be. I have been worrying about fascism in Britain since Thatcher weaponised the police against the miners. She should have been ousted then. Waiting and hoping for the best rarely works.

Rebel Nun's avatar

Please see my reply to Roger.

Dolly's avatar

and to add to my previous comment- why should we NOT be able to match their violence? I know I'm angry enough already. If we stand aside-I really think the situation will get worse. I think we need to look at what we are fighting against-Fascist lies. Pacifism did nothing for the millions murdered by the Nazis. We don't need to start the violence- but I do think we should give them laldy when they do.

Rebel Nun's avatar

We cannot match their violence because, at least in the US, they have massive caches of armaments, and the weapons manufacturers (and the politicians and entire governments the industry has bought) on their side, and zero morals.

WWII has been used inaccurately as an excuse for violence for 80 years. I would beg everyone to read the desperately important book, “Leaving World War II Behind” by David Swanson, and visiting the website www.worldbeyondwar.org

Dolly's avatar

I can only speak about the UK. We do not have access to the weapons which are so freely available in the US. I think if we did-a fight back would have begun already. As you can see from Emma's post-no guns were involved. I think the gun culture in the US is a tragedy- and it's too late to restrict guns there- as far too many have them already.

Lisa Savage's avatar

You're on fire with this post! And such a pleasant way for me to keep abreast of current events in the UK.

Well done Laura. Fascist insanity and government (sic) complicity. Same here in Texklanistan and Merikkka. Oligarchs ramping up the violence to gain ever more power and wealth. Everyone else be damned.

Got to love the fact that these multi-generational drains on the public purse (imprisonment, chronic unemployment) are fighting to defend the treasury from the cost of asylum seekers.

In my (racist and privileged) opinion, anyone flying the St George's cross should be deported to Turkey, where their hero comes from. Or dropped in the bottom of the sea with the other bottom feeders.

I oppose genocide. I support Palestine Action. ✊🍉✊

The 'union jack' is called the butchers apron in Scotland, and not without reason.

A 20 year old Sikh women was recently raped by two white racists, I can't remember which Eng city...The racists are disgusting evil violent thugs, let's hope they catch the sc*m and lock them up for many years, I doubt they will though.

Ethnic nationalism, as in othering and hatred towards anyone who doesn't fit their idea of whatever it is they find acceptable, is being ramped up. I wonder why and who might be behind all of that...hmm.

Elon musk, a trillionaire, surely there's a place in hell for him.

Great article, all so true but depressing.

Elizabeth Chandler's avatar

Thank you for passing on the information about “the butcher’s apron “. The Scots have every reason to use it . 👍🏻

RakB's avatar

Well what could you say 🤷‍♀️the most intelligent people came together to protest something they don't have the intelligence to understand 😄and as usual the pathetic political leaders supported and enhanced their racism

There’s a reason lots of Middle Eastern Christian men are named George. — the Saint of course. Westerners probably figure it was after some British aristocrat, and it renders them proudly stiff. Upon that staff may be the appropriate place to hang a Star of David, symbolic of rapists everywhere
