Am I the only one remembering how my entire country slut-shamed a 22 year old intern for "having a relationship" with the 49 year old President? A creepy perv uncle vibe is basically the one thing Clinton and Trump have in common. A creepy perv uncle vibe is basically the national vibe at the best of the times.

No, you are not the only person to recall the ruination of this poor child's life. I was a kid at 22 and I'm a couple decades older than her. Grooming, they call it. I wonder who Bill "I never had sex with that woman" Clinton might have learned grooming from? Man, that's a question I could ponder for years and never get the answer.

Monica WAS actually kind of a slut - not that I would shame her for that... (those were the days...) - but she was already having an affair with a different married guy before she went off to get her presidential knee pads, and had befriended his wife and children while doing the dirty behind her back.

Hillary, in order to portray Monica as a crazy slut set the press on the poor woman whose husband had cheated on her, and she had to go into hiding with her family.

I too had poor impulse control when I was a 22 year old - even so, it's not quite the same as raping underaged kids.

If I didn't know that the main reason Epstein got in trouble in Florida to begin with was because a girl who had decent parents and a comfortable lifestyle was accidentally invited along with her friend to the "opportunity" to "massage" powerful rich men and then after being really unnerved by the whole situation telling those middle class parents what happened and those parents being the kind of people the local police department had to pay attention to at least a little, I'd buy that. The difference between 17-22 in mental maturity is going to vary from person to person. What I'm reading is that some other old married pervert had already done a decent amount of grooming on Lewinsky and she didn't have the self esteem to see it for the bullshit it was. I don't think Epstein's case would have gotten any attention at all if these girls weren't primarily attractive and white. It's taken this long for them to get much justice at all because of attitudes exactly like yours. I don't mean that in a hostile way, I mean it literally.

Would any of this ever have gone anywhere if “big names” hadn’t been involved? Even if the authorities had been called in, they would have hushed it up for the monied people. Only because the press got wind of the big names did we ever hear about it. That’s what chills me. And today’s news proves this.

Otherwise, just about everything you say is on target. Even more so. Because everyone, both women and men, are different and potentially susceptible to this sort of “corruption.”

I think this has gone on for years and years because rich people can do shit with impunity. Their boats need to be bigger, houses bigger, cars bigger - so their sins need to be bigger too.

I mean, when you are richer than anyone, everyone says yes to your greatest whims, everyone you meet is eager to rim you... and nothing is forbidden or denied you - how do you fulfill your need to transgress?

You rape little girls. Because nothing else is exotic anymore. There is no novelty you haven't tried, no caviar you haven't tasted. You can drink whiskey and brandy from Napoleon's cellar, and you don't even need to pay for it. You're bored. Every dream, every desire has been met. You have more money than you can spend in 1000 lifetimes. What is rare? The virginity of a 12 year old.

I come from the working class, but I was lucky enough to be exposed to people of wealth who came by their wealth in various ways very early on in life, through inheritance, through work and through crime. And I can tell you that, although clearly wealth causes many problems and does change people in many ways, it isn’t wealth that does what you are talking about to people. Statistically, there are just as many horrid wealthy people as there are horrid non-wealthy people, only the wealthy have a tendency, for any number of reasons, to get away with horrid behavior more often. Thus it has always been and always shall be until we figure out a way to get rid of wealth.

You can be angry about THAT...but good luck finding a way out of that trap.

Don’t waste your energy on the rest of it. It’s endless… Use it to find ways to seek equity for the rest of us.

Allen, social science doesn’t back you up on this. wealthy people are known to cheat more often, to cut off people in traffic more often, and to that their unearned advantages are something that they earned. Sure there are pedophiles in the working classes. I know that for a fact, however, organize pedophile rings are a thing for a rich people.

Yes. The fact that all of these powerful people still felt like there was a "reason" to use his "connections" or "expertise" even after he'd been indicted for sexual abuse is extremely problematic. The fact that they considered him valuable enough to associate with him over literally every other similarly or better qualified individual on earth not with a history of of any kind of harm against any vulnerable population.

I don't disagree BUT Bill was the adult in the room. As far as I recall, there was no report of a gun being held to his head whilst all that occurred.

Oh - gosh. There is no doubt in my mind that Bill Clinton is scum. At the time, I was a relatively normal liberal, and was relieved that Reagan was gone... but yeah, he was a rapey mother fucker with impulse control issues and was then and is now slime.

Not a bit of it, Rachel. The problem was the Clintons threw Monica Lewinsky under the bus, rather than standing alongside her and saying, "Yes, Bill Clinton cheated on his wife with Monica, but we're all standing together and saying what happened is none of your fucking business."

If that sounds unbelievable to you? I saw my Sister-in-Law do it with my youngest brother, who cheated on her with her best friend (who was bit of a screw-up!) and got her pregnant. She welcomed the child into their home and he's treated like any of their kids, and she's even had the adulterous friend live with them when she was (again) homeless for a time.

Not that my brother didn't sleep on the couch for about six months or so....

Expand full comment

I think that's a totally reasonable thing to do but the power dynamics are part of what I look at now. It should be the case that in situations where everyone is an adult and everyone knows what's going on that's involved then what they choose to do in their relationships is their business. But unless your brother was old enough to be the father of the other partner as well as in a position of authority over her professionally it's not exactly the same situation. Not because their has to always be overt coercion but because in cases where the imbalance is so wide I'm not certain that it's possible for most people to reflect on whether proceeding is really in their best interests. This is why we don't condone professors dating their students anymore. Except the president, who by all accounts was a pretty charismatic and charming person when he wanted to be. I have no idea how I would have dealt with that situation in her place. Yes they threw her under the bus, AND it shouldn't have been the issue it was for the reasons it was. It should have been an issue because he was in a much more powerful position than her and they were supposed to be doing their jobs.

Expand full comment

I know—even if (as he alleged) she "came on to" him? He's not only old enough to be her father, he's the President of the United States!

What he should have said right from the start was, "I'm flattered, but no thank you."

Expand full comment

Yes, and it's totally possible there were people pointing that out somewhere. I just never heard anyone say it, and I don't know that the Epstein situation is really going to end up being meaningful in any lasting way for society (as far as it relates to young women/adolescents) but it's not nothing that these girls and women (some of them) could manage to get some amount of acknowledgement they were victimized. I don't think it's the case for most situations like these yet.

Thanks for the news. Apparently Trump met Melania through Epstein, but it's sweet that he made an honest woman out of her. Explains the 24yr age gap between them.

What's the source on that, AV?

Oh I got it in writing from Melania. And then Trump came to me in a dream and signed it, but only I can see it.

I'm joking obviously, no source aside from a photo of Trump, Clinton and Melania (and some other braless woman with a playboy bunny on her chest) with a ball game in the background. There were a few other photos floating about the net about seven to ten years ago. If she came to the US to become a famous model (and did model) it is like acting, that is, prostitution.

Google "modelling and prostitution". It's global. As seedy as Hollywood.

LOL thank God for humor.

About 10 years ago, someone in my circle used the phrase "Yachting". I didn't get it, but it was explained to me that it's a word that's used in high wealth circles; women who act as prostitutes to rich men.

Models, actresses, social media influencers...

it connected many dots.

High fashion = money laundering + fashion models = prostitution.

Fascinating & horrifying.

Happy New Year, AV. Gonna be spicy:).

“If you’re rich in America you can usually get away with any crime, even child rape. Presumably, you have to be prolific for them to think a red line has been crossed.”

Actually, if you’re rich in America, the one line you don’t cross is stealing from other rich people. If you do, the system will go medieval on your ass. You can steal from the ninetyninepercenters all you want and the system will protect you (see bankers who caused the 2007 recession et al.) If you steal from other rich people, good luck (see Bernie Madoff, Elizabeth Holmes et al.)

Hee! I read about Israel hiring Dershowitz to represent them at the ICJ. Though, given how they have reacted to UN resolutions in the past (e.g., ignored them) in terms of "settlers" on the West Bank, the fact that they would bother to gin up a defense strikes me as a PR move and not a legal move.

To the matter at hand: A repellant part of me really wants to know the pay scale for "service" to clients at Little St. John. Example: What level of compensation would be required for the girls who were assigned to "service" Hank Kissinger, starting at just being in the same room with him?

<< If you’re rich in America you can usually get away with any crime, even child rape. Presumably, you have to be prolific for them to think a red line has been crossed. >>

Correct. We have a "legal" system in the USA, but NOT a "justice" system.

<< Rest assured all the wrong people are going to be punished and none of the men Ghislaine trafficked girls to will face jail, unless they upset the wrong people. >>

As I was saying...

<< Trump, on the other hand, must be innocent because he only travelled on Lolita Express seven times and was only accused of wanting to take the virginity of a 13-year-old girl. >>

His base will simply bleat the usual responses: "fake news," "part of the Democrats' smear campaign," "witch hunt," et al. Worse still, the Christian Fundamentalists will go out and vote for him, because he represents "morality" (i.e., he's against abortion, gay marriage, and trans rights).

For one based in the UK, @Laura K, you show a remarkable understanding of US politics. Thanks for posting.

I’m in the US. In Texas, no less. It’s like hell here, and I’m afraid every day of what this year’s election is going to bring; between no gun regulations, no bodily autonomy if you’re female, and the “morality” you mention, I feel helpless and wonder always what I could be doing to make these horrors go away. And trump is STILL a free dickhole (I won’t call him a man).

Expand full comment

I have severe doubts we can do anything to make the horrors go away. Trump has unleashed the "real" USA in all its homophobic, Islamophobic, transphobic, xenophobic, violent glory. The Right-wing news media, particularly talk radio, have poisoned the minds of millions, and the fascist "judges" can apparently rule on what the Constitution says and reshape the law of the land. [Note that the Extreme Court will now, as a favor to Trump, explain that the relevant 14th Amendment section is no longer valid!] What a system!

I has to be a religion,Laura. I'd wager it goes back thousands of years. Also it fits nicely with my beliefs that those really in charge are some sort of parasitic Vampires. Raping and killing innocent babies and young children is litterly how they feed. Alas for the poor souls that don't remember Trump calling Hillary a dear friend. Look, just taking a passing scan of Trump's Jewish DNA, that is, daughter converted with Kushner sodomizing the world his way, we get the deal = Look at this shit on Kushner's fucking father. These Chosen People Know How to Lie and Market Themselves Back from Mass Murderer to Child Advocate.

Included among almost 50 clemencies President Donald Trump issued weeks ahead of the end of his presidency is a pardon for his son-in-law’s father, Charles Kushner, for a sordid crime that included paying a prostitute to seduce his brother-in-law.

“Since completing his sentence in 2006, Mr. Kushner has been devoted to important philanthropic organizations and causes, such as Saint Barnabas Medical Center and United Cerebral Palsy,” said the statement released Wednesday night by the White House. “This record of reform and charity overshadows Mr. Kushner’s conviction and 2-year sentence for preparing false tax returns, witness retaliation, and making false statements to the” Federal Election Commission.

The flood of pardons, issued is packed with figures who are close to Trump, including several who were convicted of crimes related to the federal probe into Russian interference on Trump’s behalf in the 2016 election. Historians say no president has pardoned more associates than Trump.
